State of Iowa On Track to Adopt the 2020 NEC in February

The State of Iowa is on track to adopt the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) at the end of February. The City of Ames goal is to have everything prepared by that time so that it can officially adopt the updated version as soon as possible after the State’s adoption. The City of Ames has historically adopted the NEC just as the State does, but with one local amendment (regarding the use of NM Cable). The plan is to do the same this year. Linked below is a list of the significant changes from the 2017 NEC to the 2020 NEC.

The Building Board of Appeals reviews all Code adoptions prior to being reviewed by the City Council. The Board will conduct its review at the February 1, 2021 meeting beginning at 4:00 p.m. Anyone interested in hearing more about the Code adoption or wishing to comment on the adoption may do so at that meeting. Those unable to attend the meeting who would like to provide comments to the Board, may email them to Sara.vanmeeteren@cityofames.org by January 29, 2021. The meeting will be held via Zoom and can be accessed here:
