Home Builders Association of lowa Celebrating 50th Anniversary
The Home Builders Association of Iowa (HBAI) celebrated 50 years of
building at their June Summer Conference & Outing. To highlight the event,
the HBAI Educational Corporation awarded over $12,000 in scholarships to
students pursuing a career in the home building and related industries. To
date HBAI EC has awarded over $73,000 in scholarships since 2003.
Applications are available at www.hbaiowa.org and are due annually by
February l5th.
The Anniversary Celebration honored 18 Past Presidents from across the state
who attended including the Association's 2nd President Lloyd Clarke who also
is the only HBAI member to have served as President of the National
Association of Home Builders in 1968, along with two other original founders
Robert Friedrich, Sr. President 1967 and Erb Hunziker, President 1972.
Representing Past Presidents from the Ames area along with Robert Friedrich,
Sr. and Erb Hunziker were: Bill Allen (1983); Jon Hunziker (1991); Jerry
Cable, Sr. (2001); Steve Shuey (2003); and Richard L. Fitch (2008).

The Home Builders Association of Iowa was incorporated on January 16,
1959 with 950 members, and currently has over 2400 members and 12 local
chapters across the state. The HBA of Iowa is a statewide trade association
representing the home building industry.
The primary mission and focus of the HBA of Iowa is to be the leading
advocate for the residential construction industry. The association serves as
the legal, legislative and regulatory partner for our members. The 2009 HBAI
President is Willie Delfs, Able Homebuilders of Sioux City. Serving with
Delfs on the 2009 State HBA Executive Committee are 1" Vice President
Sheila Hefel, Star Builders, Inc., Dubuque, and 2nd Vice President Tari Dailey,
Ogden & Adams Lumber, Cedar Rapids.
Ames HBA Scholarship Fund
We have a strong commitment to give back to our local community. The Ames HBA established the Ames HBA Scholarship Fund which annually provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to continue study in a construction-related field.
2009 Scholarship Information and Application

The Ames Home Builders Association and the Ames HBA Women’s Council each made a donation to the Access – Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support. The Women’s Council donated a check for $200 while the Ames HBA gave a check for $250 as well as $250 worth of towels, sheets, blankets and diapers for the residents of this shelter. The Ames HBA was pleased to be able to offer this gift of support to such a worthy organization. The Ames Home Builders Association is a not-for –profit trade organization based in Ames, but also serving the industry in and around Story and Boone counties. Our members include builders, remodelors, developers, realtors, lending institutions, sub-contractors, suppliers and other industry related groups. We all strive to better the building industry and to help others fulfill the American dream of home ownership.
