Job Description

The City of Ames, Iowa, is seeking a values-driven individual to serve as Building Official. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, the Building Official promotes Excellence Through People (ETP), the City’s values-based organizational philosophy, in leading all activities of the Inspection Division.
 
As a division of the Ames Fire Department, the Inspection Division facilitates development in the community by administering State of Iowa and City of Ames public safety codes affecting building construction, maintenance, and use. This is done by reviewing plans, issuing permits, and performing inspections for building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing construction projects. In addition, the Division inspects all private rental dwellings for compliance with the City’s Rental Housing Code, responds to citizen concerns about maintenance of private properties, and works proactively with individuals, businesses, neighborhood associations, and others to facilitate code compliance and maintain a high quality of life in the community. The Division is also responsible for enforcing the City’s dangerous building code and sign ordinance. In addition to the Building Official, division staff members include the Building Inspections Supervisor, Plans Examiner, two Building Inspectors, Electrical Inspector, Plumbing & Mechanical Inspector, Fire Inspector, two Housing Inspectors, Neighborhoods Inspector, and three support staff.

Skills & Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience: Requires five years inspections, architectural, community development, project management, or construction experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field. Preference may also be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum. Two to three years of supervisory experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
 
Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid Driver's license. Candidates who do not currently possess applicable certification (e.g., Certified Building Official, etc.) by the International Code Council (ICC) will be considered and, if selected, must agree to continually work towards ICC certification until obtainment within a mutually agreed upon time frame.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of inspection methods related to modern principles, standards and methods of building construction. Knowledge of modern principles of supervision. Considerable knowledge of local, state, and national codes in the areas of zoning, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building and housing; considerable knowledge of building construction and its materials, methods, and practices in all the trades; ability to read and interpret building construction plans, site plans, and topographic maps; skill in reading and interpreting building plans and specifications to determine conformity to building codes and acceptable construction practices; ability to prepare and maintain clear and concise records and reports; skill in budget management. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to positively facilitate customers' success in accomplishing their projects, to properly apply inspection methods and building codes, and to instruct subordinates in their application. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other departments, contractors, board and council members, other government agencies, other City employees, and the general public. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
